Class Description:
This sketching class teaches students how to capture real-life cityscapes, buildings, streets and water scenes on location in South Haven. Sessions focus on quick observation, loose pen and ink line work, simple perspective rules, and fast watercolor washes to record everyday life outside the traditional studio. Each class meeting will focus on a different location in the city limits with indoor options for rain days.
Course Objective:
- On-Location Observation: Train your eye to see proportions, negative space, and architectural details in real time.
- Confident Line Work: Practice loose, expressive ink strokes using pens or fineliners without fearing mistakes.
- Simplified Perspective: Learn easy tricks for one-point and two-point perspective to make buildings look three-dimensional.
- Dynamic Color: Apply fast, vibrant watercolor washes to add mood and depth.
Student Materials List:
- Sketchbook: Portable size, Blick Art Materials sells Handbook Journal Co. Watercolor Journal - 5-1/4" x 8-1/4", Landscape 140 lb. (Amazon has some also.)
- Drawing pencils: 2H, 4H, HB, 2B, 4B or similar, soft white eraser, pencil sharpener.
- Pens: Waterproof fine-liner pens or fountain pen with permanent ink.
- Color: A small travel watercolor pan set and a water brush pen or standard watercolor set and brush. (Students have the option to use their preferred water medium such as gouache or acrylic ink.)
- View finder: Adjustable or home-made.
- Bag to carry materials
- Small water container
- Three (3) paper towel sheets
- Portable chair
